Dr. Jason M. Handza
Dr. Handza is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist who is fellowship trained in the treatment of all medical and surgical retinal disease and laser surgery. This includes diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal tears and detachments. Dr. Handza graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience. He received his medical degree with honors from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his ophthalmology residency at Kettering Medical Center/Grandview Hospital. He then completed a post graduate fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the nationally respected University of South Florida Eye Institute. He was twice awarded the prestigious Patrick Murray Award given by the American Osteopathic College of Ophthalmology to a physician demonstrating “professional proficiency, unusual merit and skills in the practice of ophthalmology. He also received the coveted Galen S. Young, Sr. Award from the P.C.O.M. Department of Surgery for his exceptional surgical ability. He has been delivering specialty eye care in Florida since 2004.
Dr. Handza has trained with many highly respected physicians considered to be experts in the field of ophthalmology and vitreoretinal surgery. As a co-investigator, he has been on the forefront of research aimed at the treatment of macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. His research was focused on the study of Lucentis for macular degeneration, including two different Phase III trials of rhuFab V2 [Ranibizumab]; (ANCHOR) and (MARINA) by Genentech, one Phase I/II trial of rhuFab V2 [Ranibizumab], and the Phase III trial of Protein Kinase C B Inhibitor - Diabetic Retinopathy Study 2 (PKC-DRS2) by Eli Lilly. He regularly lectures at and attends conferences and educational programs on the most recent advances in the field of ophthalmology and vitreoretinal surgery. He is an active member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Osteopathic Academy of Ophthalmology. He has been appointed to the medical staff at Bayfront Medical Center, Largo Medical Center and Suncoast Hospital.

successfully established the Suncoast Eye Center Foundation in 1985. These non-profit Foundations goals are to provide or obtain, necessary eye care and treatment for the needy in our
community and educate the communities served by the Suncoast Eye Center about eye health care.
